How does Laser Tattoo Removal work?

Photomechanical Effect: Instead of using heat, Q-switched lasers fire incredibly short, billionth-of-a-second pulses. When the laser light hits the tattoo ink, it creates an acoustic (sound) shockwave that shatters the dense ink into microscopic fragments.

Immune System Clearance: Once the large ink chunks are broken into tiny particles, the body’s white blood cells (macrophages) recognise them as foreign waste. These cells consume the ink and flush it out through the lymphatic system.

Dual Wavelengths: An Nd:YAG laser features two distinct wavelengths to target different ink colors:

  • 1064nm wavelength: Passes deeper into the skin and is absorbed by black, dark blue, and grey inks.
  • 532nm wavelength: Targets the more superficial layers of the skin, ideal for red, orange, and yellow inks.

Multiple Sessions: Because tattoos are layered deep in the dermis, the laser can only break up the top layer of ink per session. It typically requires 6 to 15 sessions spaced several weeks apart to completely clear a tattoo.

Tailoring Your Laser Tattoo Removal

At Beauty Within Skin Clinic, we recognise that every tattoo and every client is different. That’s why we provide a thorough consultation before starting any treatment, allowing our experienced practitioners to create a personalised approach tailored to your needs.

During your consultation, we’ll assess your medical history, skin tone, and the characteristics of your tattoo — including its size, colour, age, and placement — to ensure the treatment is safe, effective, and suited to you. By carefully evaluating these factors, we can develop a customised treatment plan designed to achieve the best possible results while keeping your comfort and wellbeing our priority.

What To Expect

=

Consultation

Before any treatment, we carry out a comprehensive consultation to ensure your laser tattoo removal journey is safe, effective, and tailored to your goals.

During your consultation, we’ll discuss your desired results, answer any questions you may have, and review your medical history to identify any factors that could affect treatment. If you decide to proceed, a patch test will be performed to check your skin’s response to the laser.

Based on your consultation, we’ll create a personalised treatment plan designed to achieve the best possible outcome for your tattoo removal.

=

Treatment

Before each tattoo removal session, we’ll review your progress, discuss any changes to your health or medical history, and ensure the treatment remains safe and tailored to your needs. We’ll also assess how your skin responded to your previous session or patch test so we can adjust your treatment for the best possible results.

Some discomfort during treatment is normal, but at Beauty Within Skin Clinic we use an advanced cooling device to help minimise discomfort and make the procedure as comfortable as possible. With each session, you’ll see gradual fading of your tattoo, moving you closer to your desired result.

=

Aftercare

After each tattoo removal session, following the recommended aftercare is essential to support proper healing and achieve the best possible results. Your practitioner will provide detailed aftercare instructions to help protect your skin and guide you through the healing process.

If you have any questions or concerns during your recovery, our team is always available to offer advice and support, ensuring you receive the highest standard of care throughout your treatment journey.

FAQs

For more general enquiries, please take a look at some of our frequently asked questions.
How many tattoo removal treatments are required?

Most amateur tattoos require 3 – 5 sessions at monthly intervals. Most professional tattoos require 8 – 15 treatment sessions at monthly intervals.

Do all tattoos respond to treatment?

In the majority of cases we are able to remove most tattoos. No one laser can remove all types of tattoo ink, which is why we use two different lasers on site to ensure optimal results.

What are the costs likely to be?

The cost of each session depends on the size and colour of the tattoo. The total cost of tattoo removal depends on the number of treatments needed and this varies considerably from patient to patient.

Are there any after effects following treatment?

Redness and swelling may occur, similar to sunburn. This settles within a few days. Some patients may blister, which is quite normal and does not indicate potential scarring. Blistering does not require treatment and will usually clear within days. Please refer to the blister advice sheet. The treated area should not be exposed to strong sunlight between sessions without the use of sunblock (SPF 30).

Does the treatment leave scarring?

Our lasers are Q-switched, which means the lasers deliver high power in a very short pulse (25 billionths of a second). Although scarring can occur there is normally no lasting damage to the skin. Very occasionally, mild changes in skin texture may occur.

SHOULD ANYONE AVOID THIS TREATMENT?
To be considered a suitable candidate for laser tattoo removal, you generally need to meet the following criteria:
  • Physical Health: You must be free from conditions that hinder healing, such as uncontrolled diabetes, bleeding disorders, or autoimmune diseases.
  • Skin Condition: The skin in the treated area must be completely healthy with no active rashes, infections, or severe eczema.
  • Pregnancy: You cannot be pregnant or breastfeeding, as the body’s energy should be focused on healing rather than processing broken-down ink particles.
  • Age: You must be at least 18 years old.
HOW DO I PREPARE MY SKIN FOR TREATMENT?
  • Avoid the Sun: Keep the tattooed area out of direct sunlight for at least 4 to 6 weeks before your treatment. Do not come to your appointment with a tan or any self-tanner, as this increases your risk of burns and blistering.
  • Pause Medications: Avoid blood-thinning painkillers like aspirin or ibuprofen for two weeks leading up to your session, as they can cause excess bruising.
  • Stop Retinoids & Exfoliants: Avoid using harsh skincare products (like retinoids, glycolic acid, or chemical peels) on the tattoo for at least a week prior.
  • Shave the Area: The treatment area needs to be hair-free, but shave it the day before to let any minor skin irritation settle down before the laser session.
  • Hydrate and Eat: Drink plenty of water and eat a substantial meal before your appointment. This stabilises your blood sugar and helps prevent feelings of lightheadedness or nausea during the procedure.
  • Plan Pain Management: If you are sensitive to pain, ask your clinic about topical numbing creams.
